Concrete PolyFix Stabilizes I-380 Bridge Abutments

Back to Projects

Project Background

During ongoing construction on Interstate 380 between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, crews from United Contractors identified a critical issue at Exit 13. The bridge abutments were severely undermined and at risk of structural instability. A full tear-out and replacement would have caused significant project delays and major traffic disruptions, so an alternative stabilization method was needed.

Scope of Work

United Contractors reached out to Concrete PolyFix to assess the damage and provide a long-term stabilization solution for the bridge abutments without the need for demolition.

Challenges

While the project appeared straightforward, ensuring complete foam coverage beneath the abutment was the primary challenge. Visibility was extremely limited, and movement of the structure was not possible—making precision injection essential to success.

Solutions

Concrete PolyFix utilized our IDOT-approved four lb polyurethane foam mix—specifically designed for heavy load-bearing applications such as highways and bridge structures. The foam was strategically injected along the base of the abutment, expanding to fill voids and reestablish uniform support beneath the structure.

Results

The stabilization was completed successfully, restoring structural integrity to the bridge abutment while saving the State of Iowa thousands of dollars in potential reconstruction and traffic management costs.

Conclusion

This project showcases the versatility and reliability of polyurethane foam in heavy infrastructure applications—proving that Concrete PolyFix solutions can deliver both efficiency and strength where traditional methods fall short.
